India is a country with a long and diverse coastline, stretching over 7,500 km and bordering the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. The coastal areas of India are home to over 250 million people, who depend on the sea for their livelihoods, such as fishing, aquaculture, tourism, trade, and transport. However, these coastal communities face many challenges and threats, such as climate change, natural disasters, overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation, and socio-economic marginalization. These factors affect the productivity and resilience of the coastal ecosystems, and consequently, the well-being and security of the coastal communities.
To address these challenges and enhance the livelihoods of the coastal communities in India, the National NGO's Confederation has launched the Integrated Coastal Project, as part of its Community Development Initiative Program. The Integrated Coastal Project is a project that aims to provide tools for communities that depend on the sea for livelihood in India. The project is implemented by the National NGO's Confederation in collaboration with local partners, such as government agencies, research institutions, civil society organizations, and community groups. The project is under development and will cover the coastal areas of Kerala initially, then eventually to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
The Integrated Coastal Project has the following objectives and activities:
To provide training and capacity building for the coastal communities on sustainable fishing practices, coastal management, and disaster preparedness. These training sessions will equip the coastal communities with the knowledge and skills to manage their coastal resources sustainably, reduce their environmental impact, and adapt to the changing climate and environment.
To empower the coastal communities to participate in the decision-making and governance processes related to their coastal resources and livelihoods. This will ensure that the coastal communities have a voice and a stake in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the Integrated Coastal Project, and that their rights, needs, and interests are respected and protected.
The Integrated Coastal Project is a project that aims to support the coastal communities in India by providing them with tools that can enhance their livelihoods and resilience. By joining the Integrated Coastal Project, the coastal communities can contribute to this vision and enjoy the benefits of having better tools for their coastal activities.
